Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday March 26, 2010! We have quite the busy week for film with 8 regular releases, 1 mid-week release and three festivals. Yep, that's Toronto for you! I also wanted to mention to any space & earth fans (if that is even a grouping) that IMAX: Hubble 3D is playing up at the Ontario Science Centre. It came out last week but technically is a short film not a feature and the Ontario Science Centre feels very far (and technically 'North York') so doesn't make the regular listings, but since I heard it was pretty awesome I thought I'd share the space love.

In limited release this week we have 5 films to choose from. First up is the latest from The Host / Gwoemul director, Bong Joon-ho whose new film is Mother. No crazy sea monsters this time, but rather a focus on the strength and persistence of one mother for her child. It did very well on the festival circuit and I'm happy to see it get a regular release. Next up is one I'm very surprized to see have only a limited release, and that is Noam Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) latest, Greenberg starring Ben Stiller as a man who decides to pretty much do nothing. The trailer has been playing all over the place and it looks like a solid film. Next up are two documentaries, first is music centric Neil Young Trunk Show as well as more investigative approach with The Coca-Cola Case. Last up for limited releases is the New York City set drama City Island.

In wide release this week we have three releases this Friday starting with Atom Egoyan's latest, Chloe an interesting suspense/thriller that is unabashedly set in Toronto and stars Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried and Liam Neeson. We also have the very cute looking animated film How to Train Your Dragon that looks like it truly has a heart of gold, and is our 2nd 3D release of the year and is playing in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D (check your local listings). Last up for this weeks wide releases is Hot Tub Time Machine and I wonder if this comedy is going to take it all this weekend - lots of people seem excited about it and goofy title really sticks w ith you, and is... funny.. because it appears to be exactly what the film is about. Literally.

We also have a Wednesday March 31, 2010 release of The Last Song, an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel starring Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear. Looks touching (oh my goodness, I'm going soft) but I have absolutely no idea why there is a mid week release of it. Also, if you are die-hard looking forward to Clash of the Titans (2010), evening screenings have appeared for Thursday April 1, 2010 at AMC Yonge & Dundas here if Toronto. Woohoo!

Reason to see: Atom Egoyan films are always must sees in my book

Atom Egoyan's latest film brings us a suspense thriller based centred on how much we trust the ones we love. Playing with questions like: How far would you go? What kind of role would you take to find out more. An active one? A passive one? Would you bring others into the mix on this ... exploration? is a fascinating place to begin. We begin alongside Catherine, played by Julianne Moore, who ponders these questions while questioning her husband David's (Liam Neeson) fidelity.

Julianne Moore is fantastic as Catherine, pairing emotional fragility with a strong desire for the truth. It's a great character which brings the suspicious wife idea to a whole new level by pushing the boundaries to search for the truth. We also have a stunning turn for Amanda Seyfried whom carries the sexy title role with maturity and grace, she's charismatic and mysterious and pulls us right into the screen. I was very impressed with this transition to a more adult role, though there were just a few moments where I was slightly confused and something felt a little off. But, she was great the vast majority of the time. Liam Neeson delivers a perfect performance as the husband David. I also have to say that it's a refreshing to see film that although it's about the relationships, it's predominately focused on the female characters, and in essence the guy is literally 'the husband'.

I enjoyed the tone of Chloe, a lot. The tension is held very well giving it the perfect current for the thriller aspect of the film, keeping the the viewers curiosity level engaged at all times. The balance of intrigue and emotion keep the film driving forward at all times. The suspense is played very well, and I know that I'm already curious to watch it a second time round.

I loved seeing it set so clearly in Toronto, and I'm sure fellow Torontonians will appreciate the setting as much as I did. From Cafe Diplimatico to Allen Gardens to Yorkville we get to see many of the great downtown spots of our city. It's fun to pick out all the familiar places and ponder where others could be.

Overall I found it to be a strong drama-based thriller with very interesting and unique characters brought to life with intensity from the lead actors. My emotions as well as curiosity & mind were engaged throughout the entire film.

CinÃ©franco 2010 begins this week and this year marks the it's 13th annual celebration of international Francophone cinema.

You can browse the entire festival line up online to see the films included in this years festival. I know I'm not the only one looking forward to see 3 Seasons / 3 Saisons, which is nominated for 3 Genies (Best Motion Picture, Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role & Film Editing) and is playing twice during the festival. Also very curious about Les sept jours du talion / 7 Days, a 2010 Canadian thrilled based on the novel by Patrick SenÃ©cal and starring RÃ©my Girard, Claude Legault, Martin Dubreuil and Fanny Mallette.

On the international front there are films from all over the world including the France/Greece/Italy co-pro Eden Ã l'Ouest / East is West from director Costa-Gavras, Luxembourg/Switzerland co-pro RÃ©fractaire / Draft Dodger and Belgium/France co-pro Les barons / The Barons, a comedy that sounds hilarious reference getting a limited amount of 'step credits' therefore making people not in a rush to get anywhere.

Along with the features there are 2 shorts programs to enjoy. On Tuesday March 30, 2010 there will be a collection of shorts by Xavier Diskeuve and Philippe Lamensch then on We dnesday March 31, 2010 a series of shorts from the past several years including Denis Villeneuve's absolutely stunning short Next Floor.

The festival shows the majority of the films at the AMC Yonge & Dundas but also has screenings at the Revue Cinema and en boucle â" CinÃ©ma Graham Spry (Radio Canada) / Graham Spry Theatre (Radio Canada). See the screening schedule for locations.

Hot Docs Preview 2010

Hot Docs 2010 had their press conference earlier this week, and with it were many exciting announcements about this years festival. This year will start off with a bang, having not one but two films included in their opening night selections. First up is the Babies, sure to be a crowd pleaser this doc follows four different babies around the world. I've seen the Trailer with a crowd and there is a lot of ohhing and ahhing. Who doesn't like cute babies? I think we all do. That takes us to our second opening night selection: RUSH: Beyond the Lighted Stage. Those that love m usic docs will be thrilled to hear that it's coming to us from directors Scot McFadyen & Sam Dunn who have brought us 3 other fantastic docs in recent years: Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, Global Metal & Iron Maiden: Flight 666. I had to contain a bit of a squee moment when I heard the news. Hot Docs 2010 is off to a great start.

Babies opens theatrically on May 7, 2010 and RUSH: Beyo nd the Lighted Stage will open theatrically in June 2010.

The year we will be seeing new things at Hot Docs as well including a Rooftop screenings and a street party in Yorkville. I can't wait to hear more about those! Festival familiars will be happy to see the use of all the regular locations, along with the free daytime screenings student & seniors (see site for full details when available) and the return of the All-You-Can-Eat Late Night Pass which is $10 and gets you into each of the 9 late night screenings. Wow.

One thing that I am really excited for this year is the new program on the rotation called Small Acts, which is an unabashed feel good program that will look at films that focus on topics such as everyday acts of kindness to leadership and change. I'm so excited for this program! I love documentaries , but there can be a tipped scale on the darker, although important, topics. The Small Acts programs feels like a wonderful infusion to balance those scales. See more about the Small Acts program here.

Other programs at the festival include the Special Presentations program, which includes high profile films and subjects and the program that both Babies and RUSH: Beyond the Lighted Stage belong to. The Canadian Spectrum program, one title in that program I'm really curious about is Dish - Women, Waitressi ng and the Art of Service (director: Maya Gallus) which sounds fascinating.

If you are looking for stories from across the globe then you can check out both the International Spectrum and World Showcase, which have so many fascinating films listed. A few from the International Spectrum that sounds great are His & Hers (dir: Ken Wardrop) and Irish film that is described as 'A 90 year love story through the collective voice of 70 Irish women'. Fascinating. At the press conference we saw a clip from the Finnish film Steam of Life (dir: Joonas BerghÃ¤ll, Mika Hotakainen), and I'm glad they did because I wouldn't default to say a film about guys talking in a sauna would be a must see, but believ e me - this one will be a must see. Also in the International Spectrum that will be a must see is Tankograd (dir: Boris Bertram), a Danish film following a modern dance company in the most radioactive city of Chelyabinsk, Russia. A few selections from the World Showcase that instantly caught my eye are Freetime Machos (dir: Mika Ronkainen), following the worlds third worst rugby team and The People vs. George Lucas (dir: Alexandre Philippe) focusing on the relationship between fans and copyright holder. Yep. I'll always get behind films on Rugby or Star Wars.

Another program I'm always curious in is the Next program which focus on art and artist of many disciplines. This year there is music including 1991 The Year Punk Broke (dir: David Markey) following Sonic Youth's 1991 tour and Complaints Choir (dir: Ada Bligaard SÃ¸by) which takes complains and makes them choral music - brilliant. I'm also very curious about Anne Perry - Interiors (dir: Dana Linkiewicz) following mystery writer Anne Perry.

It doesn't stop there. We also have lots of focus programs, including this years Made In program looking at South America. Also spend some time getting retrospective looking at the films of Focus On: Tahani Rached and Outstanding Achievement: Kim Longinotto. Looking back at the past decade of docs with a Spotlight: Ripping Reality.

So many films to explore. Check out the information on the individual programs here or see the festival schedule online at the Hot Docs website and for us that like the paper versions, screening schedules will be out next week.

Reason to Watch & Review: For the Sword &a mp; Sandal Marathon*

Troy is a bit of an odd one for me. It made my Movie Memories from 2004 (not favourite films, but most memorable experiences) and most of the impression it left with me was not being able to follow it. So, it's not a surprize that the biggest difference I found in revisiting the film, was straight up understanding what was going on this time. When I originally saw this back in 2004 I wasn't that familiar with the story and could only spot Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, so most of the time I couldn't who anyone else was, what side they were on, and what their role was. Retrospectively, this feels really funny because now I'm familiar with all of the actors and in fact very fond of always keep an eye out for the work of Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Brian Cox (Red), Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and of course Brad Pitt.

It's also a film that the reaction to it was very centred about the time of it's release. It came out the same year as Alexander, and together those were several years after Gladiator, so there was a feeling of hopping on the popular train at the time. Although seeing it with some years distance now, Troy does stands up more on it's own than I felt at the time, but there is no denying the Gladiator influence, and even one word for word phrase that was used at a key moment. Also very referential 'of the time' was Orlando Bloom's character Paris, whom out of nowhere appears to have a strong proficiency with a bow & arrow, and I'm sure many of us watching automatically felt like we tripped back into The Lord of the Rings trilogy there.

That being said, it is a solid film in it's own right and gives us a different flavour than either Alexander or Gladiator in several ways. Although in some ways I feel like it could have been called Achilles, and been one more hero protagonist film based on the character played by Brad Pitt, whom gets a lot of screen time and even when off screen they are usually talking about him specifically or the effect or importance of his role in grand scheme of things. But, technically I would say it's an ensemble piece with Achilles on one side and then the brothers Hector & Paris on the other (played by Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom respectively) and all three of them are players of in a game played by higher powers. In this sense it's more of a ground level look at what's going on, as opposed to the regular hero story or a strive for power but rather the effects of what happens when you shake things up. Another different thing is that the character of Achilles isn't particularly likeable. He is skilled and even merciful at times, but carries a resentfulness that makes him hard to root for. But, the conflict here is that he's played by Brad Pitt which, I think by default, most people like regardless of the role. I do think he did a good job here, from the physicality of the role to th e complicated combination of being adept but also like he didn't have much choice in what he could. The emotional moments were, let's just say not as strong as the others.

Other the other side of the ensemble we have Eric Bana as Hector. When I first saw this I remember having a conversation afterwards and they talked about how great Eric Bana was, and I couldn't place him at all. This is why revisiting can be a good thing, because one of the highlights this time was just that - Eric Bana's performance of, and the beauty of the character Hector. Got to love Hector, he was the shining star here for me. The straight up, going to do the right thing, kind of guy. He had a great physical presence, during the fight sequences as well as throughout the entire film. I would even say he's felt like the hero on the second viewing, which is so odd to see when it's not the main character.

One thing that isn't the best in Troy is that women have it pretty roug h. From the 'it's all one the fault of a woman' thing with Helen to other threatening situations that often come up in any film that would use the term 'spoils of war'. It's not a huge focus, but it is present.

In terms of a sword & sandals film, it hits a lot of the marks that you want from the genre. Big battles, individual battles, pinpoints specific history, interesting and great locations. As it's more current, a lot of the effects are CGI which isn't my personal favourite, but they do showcase the vastness of the battles and places. Overall, I enjoyed it much more then second time round, and was particularly fond of the character of Hector and Eric Bana's performance.

Alice in Wonderland (2010) tops all four charts it it's third straight week. That's some pretty amazing staying power. Other new releases this week include The Bounty Hunter which landed in the top 5 of all charts, Diary of a Wimpy Kid which landed in the top 5 of the Canadian and North American charts. The dark & grisly Repo Men landed #8 in Canada and #4 in North America. Music biopic The Runaways debuted at #14 in Canada and #18 in North America. In the UK I Love You Phillip Morris debuted at #4 and The Spy Next Door came in at #6. Australian debuts included Cop Out at #5, The Rebound at #9 and Brothers at #15.

First up is a bit of a cheat with The Twilight Saga: New Moon, as it was an off schedule release date of Saturday March 20, 2010 but I don't want anyone to miss it if it's on their list. The standard 2 Disc is the one that is most readily available here in Canada, but in the States there appear to be several versions.

Next up is the John Woo historical epic Red Cliff / Chi ba which has several versions in release. Here in Canada you can get Part I & II separately or together whereas in the States you can get either the theatrical (shorter) version or the 2-in-1 version. Wow. That's a lot of version talk. Next up is Ciao, which takes a unique look at a long distance relationship and is quite a touching film. We also have the indirect effect-of-way drama Brothers starring Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire.

More Oscar winning and nominated films hit the shelves this week, including the Sandra Bullock film The Blind Side and animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox.

A few notable TV on DVD releases this week including the 2009 mini series The Prisoner starring James Caviezel and Ian McKellen which was a redux of the original series that starred Patrick McGoohan. I thought the redux was quite good, although I wished it was more than just 6 episodes. Also on DVD this week is Season 1 of Destination Truth, a show which is centred on searching out the unexplained and it's a relatively new show to me - and one that Suzie & I discussed on Hexed last week!

Blu-Ray
There are some awesome Blu-Ray deals on Akira Kurosawa films this week, I assume to align to the fact that today is the 100th anniversary of his birth. His films are so amazing, and so many are on Criterion. Today we have both Yojimbo and Sanjuro available on Blu-Ray or you can even get a 2-4-1- edition to get both.

Also out on DVD today are the family drama/comedy Everybody's Fine and the apparentlky very literal title translation film of The Men Who Stare at Goats.

Poll Results: What 2010 Book to Film Adaptation Do You Want to See Most?

The results are in! The 2010 book to film adaptation you want to see most is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 with 37% followed closely by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at 33%. I think it's probably fair to say those are the most well known of the bunch.

Next in line comes the Swedish film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with 12%, personal journey film starring Julia Roberts Eat, Pray, Love chimes in at 8% and the Beauty and the Beast redux Beastly comes in with 4%. I'm very surprized to see Never Let Me Go with no votes, but I'm also confident that very few people have heard about the adaptation as of yet, which will star Carey Mulligan (An Education), Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), Keira Knightly and Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky). What I've been reading...Amazing the consistent colour story in the book covers, eh?

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Mid Month Check in!
I feel like I've been a little slacking in my reading of The Two Towers but thankfully our gracious readalong host Shelf Love has given us some questions to ponder as a MidMonth check in. This is totally serving as inspiration to keep on trucking through Middle Earth for me.

Mid Month Check in Questions!

1. Where are you in your reading? Are you finding it slow g oing or is it a quick read?

I've just started into Book Four, which is a little behind my plan but not so far behind that I think I can't catch up. In terms of the story, Gollum was just talking to himself.

2. If youâre a rereader, how does this reading compare to past readings? If youâre a first-time reader, how has The Two Towers metâ"or not metâ"your expectations? What has surprised you most in your reading?

I've only read this once before, and I really raced though it. So far I'd say it's not met my expectations. I'm still stuck by how familiar the world/creatures/ideas are to be from their being used in general fantasy out there over and over again, rather than from reading the book originally.

3. In Book 3, we visit lots of new places and meet lots of new characters. Thereâs Fangorn and the Ents, the riders of Rohan, Saruman at Isengard . Which are your favorites? Least favorites?

Highlights are anything in Rohan. Love Eomer, Eowyn and Theoden. I'm surprized I didn't like the Ents more (I still 'hear' Gimli's voice though from the film when Treebeard talks. Why they did that I'll never know.), I found Isengard section a little boring.

4. Have your opinions of the main characters from Fellowship changed at all in The Two Towers?

Opinions haven't changed so much but really starting to see some interesting character development. You really start to see the change in Frodo here. He starts getting a little miffy and short on patience, but it's nicely done being gradual and believeable. Pippin is starting to grow as well, although I'm sure I'm picking up on that a bit more 'knowing' that it happens, but I noticed it much more this time round. Zero development if feels from Legolas, Gimli and Sam. Aragon is getting a little ki ngly though, very interesting.

5. Are there any scenes that strike you as particularly memorable? Anything you could do without?

Not a scene per se, but I love this quote of Aragorn talking to Gimli when he's giving a little defeated attitude:

"There are some things that it is better to begin than to refuse, even though the end may be dark."

2 points for Aragorn.
Also, could do without a lot of the description. It's really descriptive.

6. And the obligatory movie question: If youâve seen the movie, has it affected your perception of The Two Towers? If so, how?

The film is really affecting my reading. I hear the actors when the characters talk, and I'm impatient to see some of the characters that haven't shown up yet (namely Faramir). Also, I'm finding it a bit tough to get through it, so I admit knowing the film well make s me prone to speed reading over sections I'm less fond of (Helm's Deep, fighting in general) to keep up my reading pace.

2010 Book to Film Challenge Update

Although I've not finished reading The Two Towers yet, I've made progress on other titles on my 2010 Book to Film Challenge list:

New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (re-read)
By far my favourite book in the Twilight series, although sadly I didn't love the film. But, I will always love the book. I love the Bella/Jacob friendship and it is in this book that we really see that relationship grow. Why she loves Edward, I'll never understand. Anyhow, I re-read it in an ticipation of the New Moon coming on DVD (March 20, 2010), which film wise I didn't enjoy anywhere near as much as Twilight, as well as in countdown to Eclipse which will be in the theatres June 30, 2010. Next up on that countdown is to read Wuthering Heights (because it's discussed a lot in Eclipse and I've never read it), then finally Eclipse.

Beastly by Alex Flinn
Another 'in anticipation of a film' read, this updated version of the story of Beauty and The Beast will be made into Beastly, set to release July 30, 2010. It's an interesting take on the story, from the guy/beast point of view. Alex Pettyfer is perfect casting as the pretty-boy-turned beast, and I'm curious how close the film will be to the book. From the picture released so far they've made changes with how 'the beast' looks so who knows what we will end up with. I didn't find the book as compelling, mostly as it's a tale of the beautiful/privileged having to deal with not being so and... well...I don't have much sympathy for that. Also, for an 'updated' version, I was suprized it didn't take the opportunity to update in more areas, specifically gender roles and witch stereotypes. But, now I'm even more curious about the film. So far there is a teaser trailer and featurette, which show a little to loittle and a little too much. What can I say, I'm the little bear kinda person - I want something *just* right. I look forward to seeing more.

Random Reading

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong (Darkest Powers #2)
I read the first book in the Darkest Power series, The Summoning, earlier this year and I totally inhaled it. Interesting paranormal teen fiction and an interesting personal journey from the perspective of a female protagonist which I really enjoyed. The Awakening picks up literally where the first book stopped and again I inhaled this one reading it over 2 days and barely able to put it down. I really enjoy the characters here and am looking forward to seeing where their journey continues.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
I picked up this one from hearing Kurt & Andrew talk about it over at the Cinecast when looking ahead to the films of 2010 and I didn't listen to much more than that as I could tell that it's one you really don't want to know what it's about, but rather to experience it as you read it. After reading it , I can say this really is the case. It was a nice jump to read some straight up regular fiction, although it took me a while to adjust to the writing style but it was really worth it. It was also nice to read something stand alone, because I'm in the middle of many series. Overall, it's a great book and one I'd highly recommend. The film adaptation is in the works according to Wikipedia the casting includes Carey Mulligan (An Education), Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), Keira Knightly and Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky). Wow, that casting is so perfect it almost makes me want to cry.

On Cineaste's "Repertory Film Programming: A Critical Symposium"

All hail the old Thalia Theater!

I wish I were around to see the old haunt in its glory. A dive made mysteriously sparkling and new as film prints resurrected from the past glimmered on its screens. The panelists in this quarter's edition of Cineaste, a group of 14 repertory film programmers discussing the future of film and repertory houses, sure remember it. Between it and the New Yorker and Bleeker Street Theaters, if we trace back the ancestral lineage of informal film education in the United States and Canada, there seems to be few ot her outlets that have held such intellectual influence over its patrons. If we could bring back the heyday of repertory houses and be so indulgent as to have simultaneous access to websites like Film Studies For Free, why, university film studies programs might vanish. Never mind that that scenario is inherently paradoxical (there would be no website without the devolution of theater culture and greater access to academic film studies programs); it would, in any event, make movies cheaper, and give us considerably more communal experiences.

While I never knew the Thalia, I certainly had my own picture houses. Everyone remembers their favorite local theater. It usually remains a unique regional favorite unto you, especially as the flick-heads of the world have a general tendency to move in the wayward direction of New Y ork City, the host city of amphetamine-enriched cinephilia, where one can look fondly back at the movie houses that encouraged their original thirst for more.

I have a personal reverence for the Denver, Colorado Landmark Mayan theater myself. But it was the Tattered Cover Free Classics screenings in lower downtown Denver with Colorado Public Radio critic, Howie Movshovitz, that stirred i n me the most anticipation and happiness about the movies. Those screenings had a grassroots feel: stackable chairs for seating in a quiet carpeted room, a 16mm projector that you heard clicking a few feet away, and of course the people, who in the most simplest sense were just damn happy to be there to see a movie. Howie would introduce the film with a chunk of historical facts on the film's production and its cultural impact, and then we watched. I saw The Philadelphia Story (1940) there for the first time, by no means a rare, just-unearthed picture or print of it, in fact, that film to this day celebrates a good measure of cultural ubiquity, but to see it on film gave it more meaning. It was a 16mm black & white print, rich and silvery.

The Tattered Cover was essentially a traveling picture show set-up and taken down by Howie himself, a total DIY project, an Etsy brick-and-mortar store for screen fanatics. It was persona l and intimate, full of character, and an experience that you absolutely could not duplicate in a multiplex, and certainly not one you could repeat home alone on a DVD player. Though I had been studying filmmaking and criticism in school for a couple of years at this point, it was there for the first time that I truly became aware of the importance of the physical medium of movies themselves. Film looked different. There was a grainy texture to a film image. The whites were brighter and had a crystalline aura, and the blacks were deeper. Simply, the picture was gorgeous.

Toward the end of The Philadelphia Story the reel snapped and there was a collective gasp. Howie raised the lights, and as he spliced the film back together I remember purposefully listening to the crowd for complaints, but they never came. Howie put the last touch on the spool, the movie clacked up to full speed and I realized that I had not just witness ed a mere occurrence, a standard snafu usually seen in the projection room, but I had participated in something historic, albeit on a small scale. This wasn't exactly newsworthy, a reel of film breaking at a screening, and it wasn't anything that would be written about in a history book. In the grand scheme of things this was a pretty mundane moment that most people, I imagine, wouldn't care much about.

Still, the Tattered Cover, to me, was historic. A room full of people voluntarily crowding themselves together for an affirmation of what they saw as important in their lives: the chance to not only see a story told on screen, that is, to be entertained, but to be so entertained in an environment that demanded respect for people in your very close proximity, and patience for the apparatus bringing it to you. I don't know if I can pinpoint the roots of my affection for the movies to that very night, but I believe that somewhere in that genera l time frame I understood why film was important to me, and why it was important to our culture as a whole: to share meaningful time together charting the same experiential course. I know I couldn't have articulated it so clearly at the time, but I loved knowing that the thing I saw on screen was exactly what everyone else in the room saw too, that we collectively understood the film's cues of when to laugh, cry, swoon, or smile, and that we preferred this to the standard habit of at-home watching; we wanted to be together. Maybe it's the change of seasons that triggers such pronounced nostalgia and sentimentality as I describe this scene, but that time together in the screening room became the most perfect public experience I thought you could hope for. There we were, all in it together, living history, even if the rest of the world would never know it.

Which brings me back to Cineaste's conversation about film preservation a nd programming in their latest issue. Without film, I would never have had that experience at the Tattered Cover. Who's to say I would have ever learned to love the movies as I do now without it? Would strictly digital experiences ever have had the same effect on me? A spool of film can't snap if you're watching a DVD version of it. But the point of speculation is moot. What matters is that film is with us and for the sake of this experience and countless others like it, it must be preserved; we must preserve our history. As I read through the lively thoughts from the film programmers in Cineaste, there were a slew of references to theaters and film screenings from decades ago; already, film is a slowly aging relic of time. Some of the magazine's panelists have been involved in programming since before I was alive (and for the record, I don't consider myself particularly young anymore myself; youthful, yes, but not exact ly young), and I hope that 30 years from now this conversation will still be going.

Tom Vick, programmer at the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution, hits the nail on the head when he essentially calls for (to use marketing jargon) product differentiation: "Now that we have become just one choice in a sea of moving image options, we need to recognize and emphasize the human expertise that makes repertory programming unique, and the importance we have as entrance points for new and restored films . . . .Our [way of creating a unique movie-going experience] might be to emphasize the human element that makes repertory theaters unique, not just through creative, thoughtful programming and screening good quality prints, but through informative film introductions, hosting visiting filmmakers, live accompaniment for silent films, and other elements that aren't available by download." So let digital run from here until doomsday if it means repertory houses can create a lasting and interactive film-going experience that competes with digital and the mainstream.

I know, that's easier said than done. Though I do think it can be done. Critics can do their part to inspire their readers to appreciate the lesser-known. I'll do mine here by telling you about the last piece of repertory film I saw, Joseph Losey's The Prowler (1951), screened last night at Film Forum on 35mm for the first time in 30 years. The past revisited us! Van Heflin, a gawky young cop makes a house call to catch a prowler, but the irresistible lady inside has captured his heart. He pursues her doggedly, like a prowler himself, and from there the woman's picturesque married life devolves into the anti-American dream. Going from a ravishing Hollywood home where she lives a stable life with a prominent radio d.j., to an interstate-side motel with the emotionally impaired Heflin, to, lastly, a weather-beaten stone hut in the middle of the California desert, she gives birth to the pair's illegitimate child. Now that's film noir if there ever was any.

The Prowler is unavailable on DVD or VHS.

March DIY Entertainment Club

This month the picks for the DIY club are getting back to the well roundedness of getting DVD, CD and a book or two! Imagine that, going back to the original concept! They are all items from my wishlist and I'm thrilled to have them in my hot little hands.

Moon DVD
I'm so glad to finally have Moon. It was one of my favourite films of last year, which although I don't number that list, if I did - Moon would be in the top 5. It's kind of crazy that I haven't reviewed it, but the review would be something lik e: "See Moon. Now." Seriously, if you've ever enjoyed SciFi, see this film. Outstanding performance by Sam Rockwell, and it's a brilliant film from concept to completion. The score by Clint Mansell is so good it almost hurts. Hard to believe it's a directorial debut from Duncan Jones, and I can't wait to see what he does next. Until then - I'll be re-watching Moon.

Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg
Got this one out of the library and really found it inspiring but knew it would take me longer than the 3 weeks to get through it in earnest. Hoping to get cracking on it next week!

Vampire Diaries The Return: Nightfall by L.J. Smith
Now we get to the completist nature kicking in again. I have all the other Vampire Diaries books and totally inhaled them last September. Yep, nothing co oler than reading Vampire Diaries in line at TIFF. Heh. Anyhow, wanted to make sure I got this before the possibility of it having some kind of TV-Tie-In cover like the other version have. I have no idea if the book will end up relating to the show, but you never know. It's the first in a trilogy that comes after the original four books.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD
This is a bit of a cheat to include, as I actually won the DVD. BUT - I had already ordered it so it was technically a part of my DIY Club this month. It's not secret that I found The Twilight Saga: New Moon a disappointment but I couldn't not buy it, and after re-watching there is enough g ood in there that it's fun to re-watch (although the editing drives me nuts). Looking forward to checking out the director & editor commentary along with the 6-part behind the scenes making of documentary. This is the 2 Disc special edition, and although it was previously stated there would be deleted/extended scenes - there isn't any of that on this edition. Also, originally it was indicated there would only be 2 versions of DVD but now there are at least 5. Too many editions for me to keep up with. I have one and I'm sticking to it!

New Moon Score CD
The completist got the best of me again! I wasn't a huge fan of the New Moon score - in fact a lot of the time I found it distracting and leading in the film. But, I enjoy listening to scores while writing and I am a fan of Alexandre Desplat's work on other films like The Curious Cas e of Benjamin Button, Coco Avant Chanel and The Golden Compass. And just noticed he's on board for scoring Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I. Wow. That's awesome.

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday March 19, 2010! It's a wide week of releases this week - not a limited release in site! It's been a while since that happened, and very unusual outside major holiday seasons! But alas, there is still a nice variety of films to choose from.

In wide release this week we have 5 films gracing out screens. First up is the Canadian drama/comedy Cooking with Stella set in India starring Seema Biswas as a cooking guru teaching diplomat Don McKellar a thing or two in the kitchen. Next up is the fantastic music biopic The Runaways, centred on the band of the same name and starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight) as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie. If you are looking for some action, best best of the week is likely Repo Men, based on the book "Repossession Mambo" by Eric Garcia, and the film stars Jude Law as Remy a repo man in a near future world where organs can be purchased on credit. Also starring Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga and Liev Schreiber. Also action-like but more comedy focused is the Gerard Butler (300) & Jennifer Aniston (Love Happens) bring-in-you-Ex film The Bounty Hunter. Seems like we have a bit of a trend in the almost action plus resistant male/female team-ups, we will be seeing more of these throughout the year. Last of for this week is another novel adapt ation, Diary of a Wimpy Kid based on the series by Jeff Kinney.

Reason to see: Biopic on the band The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning? You couldn't keep me away.

The moment images from The Runaways started popping up onlin e, I had a feeling we were headed for a good ride. I know looks aren't everything, but a film that's willing to be authentic on the mullet like hair has got the guts to go far. The Runaways has got guts. They go for it. I love how it didn't gloss over anything. Things what would be messy were messy, what you'd expect to be dirty was dirty. Of course there is fair share of glitzy and gloss - where it should be, like on stage, but it doesn't shy away from the gritty realities. It feels like a really honest take on things, sure there are frustrations and barriers of being an the first all-girl band of it's kind, but it also embraces the franticness of life at the time.

With the film being based on a book by Cherie Currie and executive produced by Joan Jett, you have to feel confident that the film presents an honest vision from the biographical point of view. One of the things I love about it i s that it doesn't shy away from the flaws of life, that how even with the best of intentions, life can run it's own course and throw you curve balls along the way. People reactions can be different to the curve balls, because everyone is different. In a lot of ways it's a beautiful tale of persistence, resilience and what you can do if you've got drive.

The casting is genius, having two talented women in the forefront with Kristen Stewart (Twilight) playing Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) as Cherie Currie, who make up two of the core members of the rock band this biopic film follows. Both provide stellar performances. I'm continued to be impressed with Kristen Stewart, whose roster of films keeps getting more and more varied providing us with strong performances every step of the way. Dakota Fanning is amazing in the role of Cherie, providing a stunning performance of a character which a range from drive to vulnerable to everything in between. Together they make up the heart and human connection in the film, we see their friendship grow over time and they also showcases how the same journey can taken yet received so differently by different people. Michael Shannon is also a shining star in the film, in a very memorable performance of the supporting character Kim Fowley.

Overall, it's a keeper. I'm already looking forward to seeing it again. It's a great story with strong performances and fantastic music to rock the house.

Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go listen to Crimson and Clover one more time....

I really went back and forth on whether or not to included Hercules (1983) in the Sword & Sandal Marathon. I remember watching it as a kid, but only having vague memories of the film but somehow I know for certain that I was playing the Mystery Mansion board game at the time. Anyhow, in the end my curiosity got the best of me and I went for it.

Oh, boy. It's an interesting take of the lore. The go with a bit of a Sci Fi ang le, which I didn't remember at all, and sometimes it's concrete (Gods hanging out on a planet) and other times it's more vague (i.e. I'm not sure where they were) and that can be epic, but here feels like it's stretching and pretty far fetched. The base storyline is a little familiar, but I almost all the sword & sandals films follow hero a storyline so that's easily overlooked. But, there are clear influences from many other films from Clash of the Titans (1981), Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and even Star Wars.

Although there is fighting in the film, the is also specific feats that Hercules has to perform and that was what I remembered the most but seeing them as an adult they don't quite live up to my memories. That's mostly due to the effects, which haven't aged well. One way to look at is in terms of placement in the Sword & Sandals world, is that it came out smack dab between Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984) and it feels like it. The story doesn't quite have enough to hold us in, and then the effects can really pull you out of the film. But, looking at my reviews the only other film I've reviewed from 1983 was the series "V" (1983), so perhaps it's fair to overlook the effects even though a few were effective.

The other thing that really struck me about the film was the overall art design and costuming. At times it was very theatrical, even reminded of the feel of Hammer Horror. But a lot of the time it was crazy! I mean, totally crazy in that 80's way that now we can see so clearly in hindsight as jazzercize meets scifi. Also, the women in the film often had outfits that left them with not very much to work with. That really surprized me. But then again, same goes for Herc so at least it was balanced there.

I'm not sure if I'm adventurous enough to give the sequel a go, I know I've never seen that version before. We'll see.

Akira Kurosawa. Almost three years ago to this day that I watched a Akira Kurosawa film for the first time. The film was RashÃ´mon. What an way to be introduced to his work, considering the film itself is a masterpiece as is now firmly planted in my favourite films of all time. He is a director that created so many brilliant film from Ikiru to Seven Samurai / Shichinin no samurai. Even if you haven't seen his work, you will have seen his influence on other filmmakers, sometimes as homage but also in outright thievery. But, originals are where the heart is and Kurosawa had a lot of heart. From samurais to school teachers to public servants he brought us unique and emotional tales that know no bounds. A visionary and master storyteller, he is a director that I know is a touch stone for many of us and I always kno w I am amongst friends if we can wax poetically about the man they called The Emperor.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth, which is next Tuesday March 23, 2010, there is a lot of Kurosawa love out there. Univarn is celebrating with 23 Days of Kurosawa over at his site Life in Equinox, we also have lots Kurosawa coverage over at the Toronto J-Film Pow Wow and the Criterion Current has a Kurosawa Birthday Month going on there.

DVD Releases March 16, 2010

Welcome to this weeks DVD releases for Tuesday March 16, 2010! Actually we are going to spin a little bit into the future as we have a few releases this week that are coming out on Saturday March 20, 2010 or if you can't wait a second later than you need to, Friday just after midnight (check here for Midnight Release Parties). What is this midnight release? None other than your favourite vampire romance sequel: The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Yes, the wait is almost over. I know I'm very curious to see it again. Going hand in hand with that release is Twilight in Forks, a documentary on the town of Forks when the world of Twilight is set and will also be released on Saturday March 20, 2010.

Now to our regularly scheduled Tuesday releases and first up is one of what I considered the most enjoyable films of 2009: Ninja Assassin. This is a straight up meets expectations films. There are ninjas! There are assassins! There is fighting and lots of blood. It's fun times I tell you, fun times. One of the most controversial films in terms of release tactics from last year was none other than The Fourth Kind, which was promo'd as dramatizations of real events of alien encounters. Turns out, the real-ness wasn't so real. I still found it one of the scariest films of last year though I that was before that re al / not real issue came to light. Also in release this week is the 2010 film High Life, Canadian crime/comedy starring Timothy Olyphant.

Now for some films that are still on my 'to see' list. First up is Pedro Almodovar's latest Broken Embraces starring Penelope Cruz. We also have two documentaries: Good Hair the Chris Rock exploration of African-American hair and the music doc Under Great White Northern Lights centred on The White Stripes. Also in release is the animated film Astro Boy.

Getting a Blu-Ray release this week is Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels, which is a follow up to Chungking Express / Chung Hing Sam Lam. I'm always game for a Wong Kar-Wai film and this is one that I know I need to see!

One week ago the Academy Awards aired for four sleepy hours and Scarlett Cinema sat in silence. As perhaps the most underwhelming of Oscar shows in memory, myself and Scarlett's sister blogger, Spinster Aunt, kept a log of happenings to stave off sleep. If the show wouldn't keep us awake, our note-taking would.

Warning: As the primary bond keeping my critic friends and I together is actually a series of jokes at one another's expense, the notes below will surely offend you. I apolo gize for that in advance, but after such an uneventful Oscar night, it's only fair that Scarlett Cinema and its constituency express itself on the matter truthfully.

In that vein of thought Marlene Dietrich says the Sins of Omission are "the blackest of our daily sins," and that Self-Discipline is "the most useful of all disciplines," so I really am morally obligated to transcribe these words here tonight, if for no other reason than the sake of thoroughness and consistency of self-expression. Forgive the delay.

Spinster Aunt and I took the minutes on March 7, 2010, while friends from Termite Art and other Scarlett Cineastes contributed meaningless banter at our side. Here are the highlights of the collective's thoughts, which can only be described as silliness at best and unpalatabl e negativity at worst. If you didn't know it before, let this be a lesson that you should never let critics into the Oscar show:

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday March 12, 2010!

In limited release this week we have three releases to choose from. First up is the WWI set historical biopic on Baron Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron, which is a truly beautiful looking film with great cinematography. It stars Matthias SchweighÃ¶fer in the title role alongside Til Schweiger (Phantom Pain / Phantomschmerz), Lena Headey and Joseph Fiennes. Next up we have an Australia thriller Cactus with a cast that includes Bryan Brown. I've been totally digger Aussie horror recently so I'm going to do my best to check this one out. Last up for limited releases is the 7-time festival award winning documentary Prodigal Sons.

In wide release this week we have 4 releases hitting the multiplexes. First up is what most people are referring to as the 'no-Bourne Bourne film' Green Zone, starring Matt Damon as someone who's determined to get to the bottom of some kind of secret and is directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum). I know I'll be seeing it. Another huge release this week is the Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight) Emilie De Ravin ("Roswell", "LOST"), Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper and I'm sad to say I can't recommend it. See my review for more details if you are curious as to why. Last two films of the week are odds and sods romantic comedies: Our Family Wedding featuring a happy couple whom have feuding future father-in-laws and She's Out of My League which focuses on how unbelieveable it would be for a "10" played by Alice Eve to be interested in a "5" played by Jay Baruchel. And people wonder why I don't dig comedies...

Kanchipuram: The Kanchipuram priest scandal acts as another eye opener for the hypocrisies that lie behind the faade of celibacy and piety in the places of worship. A priest in Kanchipuram was arrested for indulging in sexual activities in the temple precincts and capturing them live on video. What makes the whole scenario even worse is that all this would take place even while unsuspecting devotees would be outside the temple, waiting to pay their respects and perform puja.

Kancheepuram devotees got shocked by the exposure of temple priestâs indulgence in sexual activities. The surprising element is the fact that offender Devanathan, 36-year-old priest used to indulge in sexual acts at the time when devotees were waiting outside to do puja ceremony. He was running from the custody for a month, now he surrendered before the police on 16th Nov. & his bail got rejected.

The priest was not only indulged in immoral b ehavior but he even captured the whole scenario on his mobile phone. A mobile phone mechanic disclosed the mms& the priestsâ scandalized deed, when he was about to repair priestâs mobile phone.

Devanathanâs sexually overt MMS got circulated on mobile phones& the internet too. These sexcapades appeared to be captured in the summer month. The clips are of somewhat around 90 minutes& got circulated with wild rage among the teenage group. The video had shown, Devanathan indulging in sexual acts even though he was performing religious rites too.

In the meantime, police had lodged a case & investigation had begun.

Reason to see: How can you not want to know more about the legendary Red Baron?

Set in WWI, The Red Baron is a biopic following Manfred von Richthofen, aka The Red Baron, the world renowned as the best fighter pilot. Seeing this story from his perspective is unique, especially considering the dominate depi ction of Germans in war films, at least ones shown in North America, centre on WWII and atrocities. Itâs refreshing to get a different part of history here, one rich with character and where the focus is centred on collective as well as individual prestige and honour. It starts from a rather distanced perspective of war as sport, Iâd even go as far to say shown as a gentlemenâs sport. Rules, guidelines, boundaries set and understood not to be crossed. I really enjoyed seeing a war film that had little to no individual malice to it, one which looked at it from the perspective of honour and skill, but didnât shy away from the eventual severity of the reality of war.

It is a biopic at heart and the journey lies with The Red Baron played by Matthias SchweighÃ¶fer, and the weight of the film lies on his shoulders. His performance is solid, with the growth of character unfolding gracefully over time, often feeling restrained or subtle. This amplifies the realism to it being an actual person but also made it a bit challenge to get drawn into his world. In effect, we see a rather gradual and natural progression of his character throughout the film. Coming from the perspective of someone who isnât familiar with the story, I wondered if I would be more affected if I had awareness of importance of different encounters in the film. The supporting cast brought a lot to the film, especial the fantastic Til Schweiger, as Werner Voss who lit up the screen any time he was on.

Where the film truly shines is in the cinematography and visual effects. It is a beautiful film to watch. The action sequences with the planes are astounding in it of themselves, but each and every shot of the film is beautiful whether we are seeing grassy landscapes to hospital interiors. I wanted to drink in every visual moment as every moment was a moment worth seeing.

Reason to see: Won free tickets!

Iâll admit that I went to see this film in part to see Robert Pattinsons acting skills (yes, Iâm a Twilight fan, but I'm also objective). Itâs research folks! And besides, the trailer looked inte resting and it features tons of actors I enjoy, along with Robert Pattinson who plays the lead character Tyler, a broken early twenties guy, Pierce Brosnan as his Dad (aka mean Dad #1), Emilie de Ravin as Ally "the love interest" and Chris Cooper as her Dad (aka mean Dad #2). Lots of opportunity for conflict and interesting relationships, no? Youâd think that, wouldnât you. Too bad that none of the characters were likable or believable, in any way. Both the Dads were one dimensional and both Tyler & Ally felt under developed and in unrealistic or not believable day-to-day life situations.

Iâm thrilled that I lucked out into winning free tickets, because I would have been miffed to pay to see this film. The biggest question I left with was not being sure what they were thinking or who this film was made for. New Yorkers, perhaps, but it certainly isnât the romance it has been marketed to be. We have two attractive leads in a relationship, but ro mance? Not really. There is a hint of the idea the complicated nature of real life being not perfect and odd happenstance, but doesnât have any awkwardness that would be present if that was what they were going through. There is a certain amount of chemistry between the leads at times, it's not enough to pull you in and certainly not enough to carry through the film to care enough about the relationship or the people involved. The screening I went to introduced this film as being one about lost, which is much more accurate that any the trailer or any other marketing Iâve seen. Itâs not the happiest of topics, but certainly can resonate with a lot of people and can be done well but felt like a missed opportunity here. There was also more violence than I would have expected. If they were going with âreal life is harshâ thing, they certainly got that, but placing it in the everyday kept it grounded in being really depressing.

Itâs really too bad, bec ause I am a fan of all the actors involved here, but didnât enjoy any of the performances. Any of them. Itâs a shame too because theyâve all got the chops.

Trailer Time!

New Tron Legacy trailer! Although called a teaser trailer, its 2m 20sec! That's pretty long for a teaser which usually are more in the 10 - 30 second range. I've not been keeping super tabs on Tron Legacy because I wanted to stay spoiler free but once the trailer started I couldn't resist watching. That may have been because I love listening to Bruce Boxleitner's voice - what can I say, die hard B5 fan. Anyhow, I think they've done a great job with it, especially some how keeping the visual style of the original Tron without it looking like it's from 25 years ago. Impressive. But, as most trailers I think it shows to much. Watch only 1/2 way if super spoiler sensitive. Tron Legacy is scheduled to release Friday December 17, 2010, and yes it's going to be in 3D.

Thanks to the folks over at Geeks of Doom for the heads up on the new Robin Hood trailer. When the first Robin Hood trailer came out I was a little was hesitating over getting excited about the film, mostly because of the music and style made it feel formulaic. BUT - I'm loving the new trailer, it shows a lot (2m 30s trailer!) but gives a much better sense of the stories and characters. I'm thrilled to being back to being excited about the film. Robin Hood is set to releases Friday May 14, 2010.

Two trailers in two days for those of us anxiously awaiting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Yesterday we got the 10 second teaser trailer and then this morning the full 90 second trailer debuted online (and will in theatres tomorrow March 12, 2010 with Remember Me). I had anticipated we would see a more action-packed trailer, but I'm happily surprized that the tone and content remain surrounded on the characters and their emotions & relationships, which is truly the heart of the series. But with David Slad e (30 Days of Night) directing everyone is expecting action & darkness - and a possible draw for more male viewers. So far, not seeing that as the focus here and I'm thrilled. It may certainly turn up in the film though, which would still be cool The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is scheduled to released Wednesday June 30, 2010.

In Theatres:
Alice in Wonderland (2010) had a huge debut weekend smashing the Box Office around the world. It had the highest grossing weekend for 2010 so far, by a fair amount. It's great to see a fantasy focused film with a female protagonist achieve such success. Apparently the box office takings for 2010 are higher than 2009, but even if you look at the numbers compared to 2009 weekend grosses, it would have placed No.2 in Canada (with $8.63M) and North America ($116.1M) coming second only to The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Over in the UK it would have been 3rd, only after Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Out this Week
The thriller of the week would have to be Green Zone, or as some people call it the 'Non-Bourne-Bourne Film'. Hard to argue with that considering it stars Matt Damon as a 'searching for the truth' military type and it directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum). But, I liked both the 2nd and 3rd Bourne films and continue to enjoy Matt Damon's work so I'm definitely going to give it a shot, even if it did feel like the trailer showed us too much. Also out in limited release this week is The Red Baron, a historical biopic on Baron Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron. And if you missed it the first time round, the 6-time Oscar Winning film The Hurt Locker to returns to theatres this week according to Maple Facebook Page.
